The first major championship of the 2024 men's tennis season will be awarded early Sunday (U.S. time) at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev takes on No. 4 seed Jannik Sinner in the final, which for the first time since 2005 does not feature Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer. Neither finalist has ever won the Australian Open.
Sinner, a 22-year-old from Italy, defeated top-seeded Djokovic to reach his first Grand Slam final, breaking the 10-time champion's unbeaten streak in the Australia Open semifinals. Sinner also is the youngest player in the final since Djokovic won his first title in 2008.
Russian star Medvedev, 27, defeated No. 6 Alexander Zverev and will play in his sixth Grand Slam final and third Australia Open final in the last four years.
In last year's final, Djokovic won his fourth Australian Open title over a span of five seasons, and 10th overall. He did not compete in the 2022 Australian Open after he was deported because he was not vaccinated against COVID-19.
At the time, the victory marked his 22nd career grand slam, which had tied Nadal for most in men's tennis history, a mark he has since surpassed. In the 2023 Australian Open final, Djokovic toppled Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).

The men's final will take place on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 3:30 a.m. ET (7:30 p.m. local time).
Melbourne is 16 hours ahead of Eastern Time in the USA.

The prize pool for the Australian Open has increased to a record $10 million, which is a 13% increase from the 2023 event. The winners of the men's and women's singles will each receive $3.15 million in Australian dollars, while the runner up will net $1.725 million.
