John Legend isn’t the king of four-chair turns on “The Voice” — he’s el rey.
Legend was charmed by Latin singer Willie Gomez alongside fellow coaches Niall Horan, Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani during the sixth round of blind auditions Tuesday night. The Miami dancer and vocalist earned a four-chair turn with his suave performance of “La Bachata” by Manuel Turizo.
The “All of Me” singer got some coquettish competition from Stefani, who gushed over Gomez’s vocal talent and look. “Your voice is so beautiful and flawless. He has so much stage presence,” Stefani said. “You’re gorgeous.”
Gomez, who’s worked as a dancer with major popstars such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez, also got props from Legend for his versatility. “You can do all the things you need to do to be a big star,” Legend said.
Stefani’s wooing was no match for Legend’s star-making sales pitch, as Gomez chose Legend to be his coach.
“We’re locking eyes (and have) this whole chemistry,” Stefani said, but he “doesn’t choose me. He chooses John fricking Legend.”
Here’s what else went down on Tuesday’s episode.
John Legend annoys Gwen Stefani by winning R&B crooner Caleb Sasser
Legend is on a roll that’s as smooth as his R&B chops.
Singer Caleb Sasser dazzled Legend and the rest of the coaches with his angelic vocals and jazz-inflected rendition of Toni Braxton’s “Another Sad Love Song,” earning the 27-year-old a four-chair-turn.
“The ease at which you sing is just so beautiful, in the most humble (and) down-to-earth smiley way that you can possibly do it,” Horan told Sasser. “It would be an honor to coach someone as unique and authentic as you.”
The North Carolina crooner also received plaudits from his musical hero Legend.
“That was magical,” Legend said. “The key with artists like you especially is picking songs that have great melody and allow you to be the musician that you are. We can have a lot of fun doing that together.”
Sasser and Legend are going to have a ball. The singer joined Team Legend.
“John is doing incredible, and it’s so annoying,” Stefani said. “If John makes a mistake, Caleb will end up on Team Gwen.”
